Converse Mill, located in Converse, South Carolina, was originally built in 1896. Over the years, the building has been an integral part of Spartanburg County’s textile industry, originally serving as Clifton Mill No. 3, part of the Clifton Manufacturing Company, one of the largest textile mills in the United States. The mill played a key role in the region’s economic growth, contributing to Spartanburg’s emergence as a major textile center. It remained a working textile mill for over 50 years before transitioning to warehouse use. Two of the three original buildings were demolished in the early 2000s. Now repurposed, it serves as a residential development, preserving its historic charm while offering 173 loft-style apartments with views of the Pacolet River, incorporating National Green Building Standards (NGBS) Bronze-level requirements for sustainability. Through the South Carolina State Historic and Textile Mill Tax Credits, Converse Mill Lofts supports the growth and well-being of the Converse community, ensuring its legacy remains a vital part of the city’s future.
