About McDonough

The city of McDonough was founded in the 1820s and was named after Commodore Thomas MacDonough, a decorated naval officer from the War of 1812. As the leading business, cultural and educational center of the area, McDonough became the first in the United States to be officially designated as a “City of Character.” With the introduction of the railroad, more people started moving to the city, building homes, practicing law, and even moving the newspaper from Hampton, Georgia to McDonough.
