Baxter Lofts, located in Harlingen, Texas, was originally built in 1927. Over the years, the building has been an integral part of Harlingen’s commercial history, originally serving as the R.W. Baxter Building, the tallest structure in the Rio Grande Valley at the time of its completion. Designed by architects Birger A. Elwing and Roy Winfield Mulhausen, it housed professional offices, government agencies, and even a radio station. Throughout the decades, the building transitioned through various uses, including a brief attempt at residential conversion in the 1950s as “Skyview Apartments.” However, by the late 20th century, it fell into decline, was abandoned, and remained vacant for decades. Now repurposed, it serves as a modern residential development known as Baxter Lofts, preserving its historic charm while offering 24 loft-style apartments that contribute to the revitalization of downtown Harlingen. The restoration project maintained the building’s historic façade while incorporating modern amenities for residents. Through the Texas Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit, Baxter Lofts supports the growth and well-being of the Harlingen community, ensuring its legacy remains a vital part of the city’s future.
