Electric Works, located in Fort Wayne, Indiana, was originally built in the late 1800s. Over the years, the site has been an integral part of Fort Wayne’s industrial landscape, originally serving as the Fort Wayne Jenney Electric Light Company, where inventor James A. Jenney manufactured his Electric Arc Lamp and Dynamo generator. In 1899, General Electric acquired the site, and by 1911, it became the Fort Wayne Electric Works of GE, a major manufacturing hub. Over the next century, the campus played a key role in industrial innovation, producing rotating machines, commercial lighting, refrigeration units, and small electric motors. During World War II, it became a critical supplier of superchargers for military aircraft. Manufacturing at the site ceased in January 2015, marking the end of an era for this historic campus. Now repurposed, it serves as a mixed-use development, preserving its historic charm while offering a vibrant mix of office, retail, housing, hospitality, and entertainment spaces designed to foster connectivity, innovation, and community engagement. Through the Indiana Industrial Recovery Tax Credit, Electric Works supports the growth and well-being of the Fort Wayne community, ensuring its legacy remains a vital part of the city’s future.
